West Assam Milk Producers’ Co-operative Union Ltd. (WAMUL), renowned as Purabi Dairy, celebrated a significant milestone in bolstering Assam’s rural economy last fiscal year.
The dairy cooperative achieved an impressive 28% growth, surpassing a turnover of Rs. 262 crore. Notably, Purabi Dairy’s standardized milk sales surged by over 20%, exceeding Rs. 200 crore in liquid milk sales for the first time. This accomplishment solidifies its position as the largest dairy cooperative in Northeast India.
The sales of milk products also soared by 35%, with substantial increases across various categories including curd (47%), ghee (38%), paneer (36%), and lassi (16%).
Satya Brata Bose, Managing Director at WAMUL, expressed enthusiasm about this achievement, stating, “We are delighted to announce this exceptional growth, which underscores our steadfast commitment to supporting dairy farmers and promoting sustainable practices in Assam. This milestone reflects the dedication of our team and the trust placed in us by consumers and stakeholders alike. We extend our sincere thanks to the hardworking dairy farmers whose dedication and resilience continue to inspire us.”
Purabi Dairy expanded its market beyond its traditional territories, reaching from Tinsukia district to Dhubri in Western Assam. Moreover, its products are now available in the North Bank of Assam, including Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts, marking a significant geographical expansion.
The Indian Army’s unwavering support has significantly contributed to Purabi Dairy’s growth, with rising demand for fresh milk from the cooperative sector among our defense forces.
In line with its commitment to innovation, Purabi Dairy introduced new offerings like Purabi Mango Lassi and Purabi Ice Cream to cater to evolving consumer preferences for refreshing summer treats. The newly inaugurated dairy plant at Panjabari will play a pivotal role in achieving this goal, along with the introduction of newer product categories such as sweets and flavored milk.
Looking forward, Purabi Dairy has set an ambitious target of surpassing Rs. 350 crore in turnover for FY 2024-25. The cooperative remains steadfast in its support for farmers, with initiatives aimed at enhancing their livelihoods and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. With the revival of East Assam Milk Union Ltd. (EAMUL) under the ‘Purabi’ umbrella, the milk procurement network of Purabi now extends into upper Assam, with total milk procurement surpassing 80,000 liters per day through more than 900 Dairy Cooperative Societies.
Purabi Dairy remains dedicated to supporting dairy farmers across Assam, contributing to sustainable and ethical practices in the industry. As the cooperative continues to expand, its positive impact on farmers’ livelihoods and the overall development of the dairy sector in the state is expected to grow.
