The inaugural ceremony for the first fishing twine factory, operated by the Kerala State Co-operative Federation for Fisheries Development (Matsyafed), took place in Paravur, Alappuzha last Thursday.
Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian inaugurated the yarn twisting unit, marking a significant milestone in the state’s fishing industry.
This newly established unit is dedicated to producing twine, utilizing nylon yarn twisted from caprolactam chips. The primary objective is to supply twine to Matsyafed’s three fishing net factories located in Kochi, Kannur, and Thiruvananthapuram. In its initial phase, the facility plans to manufacture approximately 500 tonnes of twine annually, sourced from external yarn suppliers.
Matsyafed officials emphasized the potential benefits of in-house twine production, asserting that it would enhance the quality of fishing gear while maintaining affordability for the fishermen. The facility, occupying 1.5 acres of Matsyafed’s own land, was established at a cost of ₹5.5 crore, with ₹5 crore sanctioned by the State government. The unit is expected to generate employment opportunities for around 50 individuals.
